Menstrual cup

According to research, menstrual cups are the new eco-friendly product that doesn’t harm or cause the vagina discomfort.

What is it?

The menstrual cup is a small, flexible cup made of silicone or latex rubber. Unlike your regular pads or tampons that absorb your flow, the menstrual cup catches collects your flow into the cup.

How it works

Just before your period begins, tightly fold the menstrual cup and insert it like a tampon without an applicator. Used correctly, you shouldn’t feel it. When inside, your cup will spring open (you may need to rotate it first) and rest against the walls of your vagina. It forms a seal to prevent leaks and it then blood simply drips into it.

The added benefits is that most of these cups are disposable but a large number of them are reusable. In process to remove it you pull the stem sticking out the bottom and pinch the base to release the seal. Then you just empty, wash with soap and water, and replace. At the end of your cycle, you can sterilize your cup in boiling water.

  • Because it is eco-friendly, you can leave it for up to 12 hours (unlike the minimum 4-6 hours requirement for a tampon) meaning you can rest easy overnight with no worries.
  • Less mess as it holds all the flow in a bucket like way and there are no chances of it leaking.
  • It holds more flow for a longer period than the normal pad or tampon.
  • Less odour

  • It can cause irritation and discomfort the first few times you use it
  • It may be tough to find the right fit because of cups come in different sizes
  • Removal may be messy if you remove it in a public bathroom. You may need to wash it in the basin used by everybody and that may be embarrassing.

As someone who is still on the fence about menstrual cups, I still think its an important option to look into. Especially when you factor in how much pads and tampons can cost you ever month. And how bad they are for the environment. So do your, research and see what the pest option for you is.
