As a young woman Mam Winnie earned a degree in social work and landed a job at a Johannesburg hospital. Shortly afterwards she met Nelson Mandela, a much-older lawyer. Most people believe that he was the one who stirred in her a passion for politics. Which saw her fight for black people and particularly black women during apartheid.
Our nation has lost a heroine, a mother of our nation, that fought for freedom in an era where freedom seemed far away. And was on the front lines at the time former president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years.
